Turmeric Paste

Turmeric has had a real buzz lately as a one of the world’s most effective health foods and rightfully so! It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda (Indian Medical System) as one of the most healing spices for an arrange of ailments.

Turmeric is a rhizome of the ginger family, it is a root grown in warm tropical climates. It has a peppery, spicy, bitter and yet floral flavor and is known for its golden to orange hue. It has a tough outer brown skin and deep orange flesh. It is famously loved in Indian, southeast Asian, and middle eastern cooking. It has also been used as a dye.

 It is most commonly used as medicine for its radical anti-inflammatory properties but is also known for its anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties as well. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant and has been shown to block cancer growth. Some studies now show that it can reduce your risk for diabetes and aids in digestion by supporting your livers production of bile.  It is used to treat treat a wide variety of conditions, including flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, bloody urine, hemorrhage, toothache, bruises, chest pain, and colic.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cup of filtered or live water

  • ½ cup of turmeric powder

  • 5 Tablespoons coconut oil

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ cup honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine turmeric and 1 and ½ cups of water in a small pot, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.

  2. Bring mixture to a very gentle simmer and add another ½ cup of water. Continue to stir with wooden spoon until a paste forms

  3. Add black pepper and continue to cook and stir on low for 3 minutes, until you have a thick and smooth paste.

  4. Turn off heat and add coconut oil.

  5. Add optional sweetener (raw honey is the traditional preference) while mixture cools.

  6. Transfer to clean glass jar.

  7. Mixture will thicken as it cools.

  8. Place lid on jar after mixture has completely cooled.

  9. Give a little shake to prevent separation and store in fridge for 2-3 weeks.

Notes

Turmeric paste is a blend that consists of healthy fats, and the necessary spices that make its healing and anti-inflammatory properties more bio-available.

Turmeric’s healing properties and specifically it’s anti-inflammatory properties are made more bio-available when concatenated with something spicy in nature like black pepper, cinnamon, or cardamom.

Turmeric Paste is an easy way to incorporate turmeric into your diet. It is easy to make and will store in your refrigerator.

Add it to your morning golden milk or add it to soups, rice, or vegetables.
